HyFridge or HyFridge Dual zone: which one is right for you?

Home / HyFridge or HyFridge Dual zone: which one is right for you?

Two fridges. Almost identical on the outside. Yet there is one difference that is the deciding factor for many people.

What is the difference?

The standard HyFridge has two compartments and one display. Handy for monitoring, but you only set one temperature: that of the fridge compartment. The freezer compartment follows automatically.

Set the fridge to 4°C and the freezer compartment automatically goes to -18°C. Fridge at 6°C? Then it freezes at -17°C. You have no control over that. The link between the two is fixed in the software.

With the HyFridge Dual zone you set both zones separately. Fridge at 5°C and freezer at -10°C. Or freeze at -20°C while keeping the fridge at 2°C. No automatic link, full control over both compartments.

An added benefit of the HyFridge Dual zone is that you can switch off the freezer compartment completely when you are not using it. That way you only use the cooling space you need and avoid wasting energy.

When is the standard HyFridge a good fit?

If you mainly use the fridge to keep food and drinks cool, and only occasionally use the freezer compartment for a bag of ice or a ready meal, the exact freezer temperature hardly matters. The automatic link then gives you more than enough.

The standard model is also a good choice if you stay in one place, such as a seasonal pitch or a campsite with a hook-up, and you do not need to adjust the temperature balance regularly.

When does the Dual zone add value?

Dual zone makes sense if you really need two independent zones. Think of a longer trip where you want to keep fresh produce at exactly the right temperature while freezing meat or fish at the same time. Or the other way round: a freezer compartment at -12°C is plenty for ice cream at the campsite, while the fridge compartment is set to 6°C for your drinks.

The second scenario is energy. A freezer compartment that cools deeper than necessary uses more power. With the standard HyFridge you cannot set the freezer compartment more loosely, because it is always linked to the fridge zone. With the Dual zone you decide how hard both zones work. Not using the freezer compartment? On the HyFridge Dual zone you can even switch it off completely. That makes a difference when you travel off-grid on solar power or a battery system.

If you are on the road for several weeks with a varied diet, the Dual zone pays for itself in flexibility. For a camping weekend or a caravan trip, the standard HyFridge is perfectly adequate.

Which size?

Both versions are available in 50, 65, 85 and 90 litres.

The 50L is compact enough for a smaller space or a short trip. The 65L is the most popular size: enough for a couple or a small family on longer trips. The 85L and 90L are meant for those who travel for a long time, have a larger group, or want to use the fridge as a full kitchen fridge.

As a rule of thumb, count on about 10 litres per person per day with normal use. Going away for a week with two people? Then you will quickly need 70 litres or more. In that case the 65L is on the tight side and the 85L is the wiser choice.

The choice

Do you want simplicity and have no need for precise control over the freezer compartment? Then the standard HyFridge will do. Do you want to decide for yourself how both zones cool, switch off the freezer compartment when you are not using it, save energy or meet specific cooling needs? Then the Dual zone is the logical step.
